Transformed by God.

Do you know someone whose life could be transformed by pursuing full-time vocational ministry? Mine certainly was! After seven years with 71Five, I’ve learned that God’s most important ministry is the one He has with my heart as He uses my calling to draw me closer to Him. Would you take a moment to pray and ask God to reveal someone who might be a great fit for these openings?

Used by God.

Here’s an excerpt from a letter I recently received:

“God’s peace washed over me when I learned of what you did in my grandson’s life. We had been praying fervently that God would speak to him in his troubled mind – you were an answer to our prayers. We hope this somehow impacts you, that it gives you confirmation that you are doing what God meant you to do.

Though he died before we could see total transformation in his physical life, God gave us assurance through you that He made him whole and took him into His presence on the day he left this life. Again, I want you to know you are being used by God. I am thinking that much of your ministry is a struggle, not knowing if your day-to-day work is making an impact. You make a difference. Keep listening to God and let Him use you to impact lives and draw lost souls to Christ. He redeems and can make all things new.”

To the author of this letter… I have mourned the loss of your grandson deeply. Thank you for your encouraging words, they are precious. I am grateful for your financial partnership with 71Five Justice to share the Gospel with other hurting kids. God Bless you.

Juvenile Detention Testimonial

I was going into the juvenile detention center for the first time and wanted to see God move in these kids’ lives and mine. My friend Beau asked me to pray about becoming a volunteer, but I wanted to know if it was something the Lord was calling me to do. I’ve been saved for 25 years and in that time, I have led 3 people to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Going into the detention center for group I asked God to have everyone be saved in there that first night, but at least 3 to match my 25 years, and let me know I’m called to serve in this place.

Beau asked me to share my testimony with everyone and afterward, I asked if anyone wanted to be saved. 3 young people stepped forward and the rest were already saved so God fulfilled all my prayers at once. Your partnership with this ministry makes a difference in people’s lives, thank you. – 71Five Justice Volunteer

Job Fair Success

Recently, I took 3 young men to a job fair in Canyonville, Oregon. One I met in Juvenile Detention almost 7 years ago. We have stayed in touch over the years and continue to have a close bond. There is something truly special about the friendships I have formed with the youth in Detention, and I feel so blessed to be a trusted person in their lives. The job fair was a huge success. Each of these young men found a different career path which suited them. The level of excitement in the van ride home was glorious. As we talked, they revealed just how hopeless they had been feeling without direction and purpose in their lives.

Thank you for partnering in this work of building trusting relationships that bring hope and purpose to bleak situations.

A transformative influence to our youth . . .

Recently, I experienced a heart-wrenching loss of one of the young men I had been working with. The devastating reality of a drug overdose highlights the importance of our mission. This young man had once volunteered to share his story with Channel 12 News about how 71Five Justice and Break the Cycle had impacted his life. He spoke with sincerity about the transformative influence of the bike program and our detention center initiatives and how he saw me as a father figure in his life as I did my best to point him to Christ.

These stories are a stark reminder of the hunger for connection that these kids carry within them. The smallest acts of kindness and support can have a profound impact on their lives. His mother has offered some of his ashes to be spread on his favorite mountain bike trails we enjoyed together. This gesture reflects the deep connection and trust she has in the work we do, which ultimately allowed him to encounter the Gospel. Even though Matthew continued to struggle with his addiction, he made a sincere confession of faith, so I have hope that he is with his Heavenly Father now.

Thank you for joining in this important work, together we are making a difference for the Kingdom.

Catch a Glimpse

While driving one Saturday with my wife and kids my cell phone started ringing. It was a young man named Jaime who I met years ago when he was 14 or 15. He said, “I’m just calling to say thank you and to tell you how much I appreciated all that you have done for me.” We had spent a lot of time talking together in the little glassed-in room at juvenile detention. Many tears, much regret, and shame over the things he had done. He would re-dedicate his life to the Lord and plan to do better when he got out. I was grateful that my family was able to catch a glimpse of the depth of relationship I had with this young man and the love we shared for each other. Unfortunately, two weeks later, he was dead of a fentanyl overdose.

As I write this, I have tears in my eyes for the loss I feel. The only thing that could be worse would be if he hadn’t given his life to Jesus. I am comforted to know that we will have lots of time in heaven to catch up and hug each other once again, with only tears of joy to wet our faces. Thank you for being in this Kingdom work!

Positive Impact on Her Life

I was recently at the steel yard buying some beams to turn into a new bike trailer for 71Five’s Break the Cycle bike program. As I was at the register, the young lady asked me who the invoice should be made out to, and when I replied, “Youth 71Five Ministries,” her whole face lit up. She jumped into explaining of how she was a part of it. “I used to go every week. Clem (O’Hara) helped me incorporate my senior project into the programming!” She even shared a few details about how sometimes she used to dread going… but was always glad later on. It was clear that 71Five had a positive impact on her life.

Are you building for the Kingdom? Do you want to be a difference maker in a young person’s life that they will rave about, many years down the road, to a perfect stranger? What’s holding you back? Growing Kids

I recently broke my clavicle and one of my long-time mentees called me to check in. After talking a while, he asked, “Beau, Is there anything I can do to help you?” When I mentioned, My lawn could really use a shave!” Without hesitation, he said he would be right over. We had a good chat after he finished with the lawn, and I felt overcome with love for him and could tell he was feeling the same for me. He’s told me many times that he thinks of me as a father. I’ve done a lot for him over the years, and we’ve walked through some tough things together. For him to not even hint at receiving payment for his work made me swell with pride in his growth and character. Although… we will need to discuss proper lawn mowing procedure which includes emptying the bag afterwards!

Thank you for growing these kids!

Standing the Test of Time

Youth 71Five Ministry exists to Share God’s story with young people, through trusting relationships in any relevant way.

At 71Five Justice, we reach out to high-risk teens in tough situations. Young people are met in a variety of locations such as detention centers, probation programs, correctional facilities, group homes, residential treatment centers and emergency shelters. Relationships are developed and sustained while kids are locked up and as they re-enter their communities. The 71Five Justice team has over 20 volunteers and an Intern who accomplish a large amount of programming 7 days a week. We’re committed to building relationships that stand the test of time and last long after teens have left the juvenile justice system.

Thank you for investing in the lives of these kids!

learning to trust

I’d like to share with you a letter I received from one of the youth that was lodged at the Juvenile Detention Center.

Dear Youth 71Five Ministries,

I’d just like to write this to let you all know that I’m very grateful and appreciative of you guys for coming in and talking to us about God. It’s done a lot to strengthen my belief in God and to learn to trust that there is a method to the madness that life is sometimes. I’d also like to thank you guys for the food, all of the food that you’ve brought in for us, it’s very kind and generous of you guys to do that for us. Again, I thank you guys with all of my heart for all you’ve shared with me these last six months. I won’t forget it!

-Sincerely, Mahlon

When he says “You Guys” he means YOU! Thank you for your partnership in this ministry, sharing true hope with kids in difficult places…and for providing all of the food.
